Welcome to Derby North Middle School

Principal: Jeff Smith

Our world has changed dramatically in the last few weeks. I hope this communication finds you well and staying safe. It is very quiet at Derby North and it is not supposed to be that way in late March. We are missing seeing your students but we are also committed to being as much as a resource as we can during these next few months.

I wanted to share what we are doing at Derby North Middle School to deliver Continuous Learning for our families since the building is closed. Starting on Monday, March 30th, we will be delivering instruction in several  methods. Our main delivery platform will be online. Teachers at the Secondary level will be utilizing the Canvas program that many of your students are familiar with already. In addition to posting assignments and resources in Canvas we will be hosting regular class sessions online each morning and have office hours in the afternoon so parents, guardians, and students can reach out for assistance.

Our teachers have been in virtual trainings this week to start developing the skills and tools to reach out virtually. Moving from a traditional setting to an online school in 10 days has been a huge undertaking and there are so many people that have worked countless hours to make this happen. I am so grateful to have their talents and passion at our disposal. Your students will be the beneficiary of all of these tremendous efforts.

The rest of this email will be dedicated to sharing some resources and answering questions. As always, be sure and consult the district website and Facebook pages for the most up to date information as we navigate this new reality.

  • Teachers will be reaching out to share their instructional plans with students and parents.
  • Since the buildings are now closed you may access technology help by contacting our Technology Department at StudentSupport@usd260.com
  • We have Universal Expectations for our Zoom meetings. Please go over these with you students so they know what is expected. They are shown at the bottom of this email.
  • At the bottom of this page I will share our schedule. In addition to these scheduled classes many of the teacher lessons will be recorded and placed in the Canvas program. This will allow the student and family flexibility  when they access the material. We would like for students to check in during the Homeroom times so we can connect with them.
  • We are expanding our Under 18 Food program to Wineteer Elementary next week to supplement our current programs at the Central Kitchen and Oaklawn Elementary. We are currently delivering over 1,000 meals a day.

You will have many questions and we are by no means experts in this delivery method yet. We will give grace and would like to request it from you as well as we learn together. Please let us know of any struggles and concerns you have and we will do our best to help. The entire DNMS faculty and staff are working remotely so everyone that you know and count on is still available. Please reach out to whoever you need to. I am happy to redirect any of your questions and concerns if I cannot answer.  You can also access staff email at our school web page. Stay tuned to our school Facebook and Twitter accounts for periodic announcements too.

Stay well and safe,

Jeff Smith
DNMS Principal
